MAVS TO RING IN NEW YEAR AGAINST POWER

UNO filled one of two openings on its 1997-98 hockey schedule when
national power New Hampshire agreed to play the Mavericks in a 7:05 p.m.
game Dec. 31 at Civic Auditorium.
 
"That's a great night to play a game here," Coach Mike Kemp said Tuesday.
"Welcome in the new year with the Mavs."
 
The University of Nebraska at Omaha saw two home games drop off its
original 35-game schedule when Northeasternreneged on an oral commitment
to play Jan. 2 and 3.
 
New Hampshire gives UNO a 34th game, and 19th at home.  Kemp said he
doubts he'll be able to schedule a 35th game.  Kemp had tried to line up a
road game with Colorado College, but negotiations fell through because of
a scheduling conflict on the CC side.
 
"If the opportunity came up to play the right team, certainly it would be
a positive and I would like to play," Kemp said.  "but to find somebody
with a single game (available) at this point would be 99 percent great
fortune."
 
New Hampshire is coming off one of its best seasons.  The Wildcats, who
claimed a share of the Hockey East title and reached the NCAA tournament,
finished 28-11 and ranked eighth in the final USA Today-American Hockey
magazine coaches poll.
