RPICH (Rating Percentage Index for College Hockey) is my implementation
of the Rating Percentage Index (RPI) method that has been used the NCAA
committees in hockey, basketball, and baseball.

RPI ratings have been used by Division 1 Ice Hockey Committee as a tool for
selecting and seeding the teams for the national tournament. While RPICH
is not and has not been supplied to the Committee, it should be identical
to the official ratings.

The method isn't a secret; it has been well-documented in the press and
here on HOCKEY-L. Start with the results of non-exhibition games between
the 44 schools eligible for the Div1 tournament (they each play at least
20 games against Div1 opponents). Calculate the Winning Percentage (WP)
of each team ((wins*2 + ties) / games*2). Now, for each team calculate
the Opponents' Winning Percentage (OWP) by summing the WP of the opponent
in each game (exclusive of games against that team) and dividing by the
number of games. Calculate the Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage
(OOWP) for each team by summing the OWP of the opponent in each game and
dividing by the number of games. Finally, RPICH = (WP*.25) + (OWP*.5)
+ (OOWP*.25).

Now, the disclaimer: RPICH IS BASED ON SCORES COMPILED AND CALCULATIONS
PERFORMED INDEPENDENT OF THE NCAA AND ANY AGENTS THEREOF.

If you have any questions, please send them to me ([log in to unmask])
and I'll try to address them all. In the meantime, here's the first RPICH
of the season.

RPICH is calculated by the Rating Percentage Index method, used as a tool
in selecting teams for the national collegiate tournaments in basketball,
baseball, and hockey. Ratings are derived by summing each team's winning
percentage, the average winning percentage of its opponents, and the average
winning percentage of its opponents' opponents, multiplied by 25%, 50%, and
25% respectively. Factors such as home ice and margin of victory are not
included. No individual game is weighted more heavily than any other.
