I was wondering also how an injured player in the locker room could get
assesed a major penalty and a DQ. Was he fighting with an opposing
player or getting brutal with some fans. plus I'm sure the WCHA
officialwas on the ice trying to control those battles. How did he know
what was going on outside the ice. It seems to me also that the last
couple of years the NCAA has tried to crack down on fighting, by
assesing a DQ with a major fighting penalty. College hockey players are
required to wear ITECH face sheilds or a common cage attached to your
helmet. Speaking from past experience you can punch each other with
little or no pain. The only way you can hurt someone would be to rip the
helmet off. I agree with assesing DQ's for intentional spearing,
highsticking to the neck and facial areas, but fighting has and always
will be a partof hockey, I would like to see the NCAA loosen this rule
on major fights, 5 minute major penalty and if necessary a 10 minute DQ.
It should be up to the referee's discresion to issue a game DQ, but on
the flip side of that, the WCHA officiating has been so poor lately
maybe that wouldn't be such a good idea.
