Summary:

Union held on for a 3-2 win over St. Lawrence. The Dutchmen were led
by Mike Gallant's 35 save performance. This was Union's first win
over St. Lawrence since joining the ECAC.

Union controlled most of the first period, and came out of it with a
2-0 lead. Russ Monteith gave Union a 1-0 lead with his 3rd goal of
the weekend, with Union on the power play, when he poked a loose puck
past Jon Bracco. Jeff Jiampetti scored Union's second goal with a
great individual effort to get past an SLU defender and put the puck
over Bracco's shoulder.

In the second, St. Lawrence came back to within 2-1 with a power play
goal before Union regained the 2-goal lead on Chris Ford's 15th of the
season. There was an unusual call made when a St. Lawrence player
picked up the puck and threw it down the ice, and was called for a
2:00 penalty.

Union played a mostly defensive-minded 3rd period, although they did
have a few excellent scoring chances. The Dutchmen were stopped once
when a SLU defenseman stopped a shot that had gotten past Bracco, and
again when Bracco stabbed a shot from Cory Holbrough with his glove.
Gallant was just as outstanding at the other end. He allowed just the
one power play goal, which was a very nice deflection of a shot from
the blue line. The power play never should have happened in the first
place, in my opinion. Union's Chad Thompson came in toward the net,
and ended up going onto the crossbar and hanging on. A St. Lawrence
player skated in and pushed his head over the crossbar. When Thompson
hit back, he was called for the penalty. The best sign was when
Bracco was pulled for the extra skater, and instead of running around
in the zone giving up scoring chances, the Dutchmen were keeping the
play out of their end and successfully killing the clock.

The thing that stood out with this St. Lawrence team was their size.
They have some very large players. #29 (Joel Prpic) was just huge.
The smaller players on Union were no match for him. He is listed as
6'6", 210 lbs. They also had 3 other players listed as 6'3".

Gallant was outstanding for the second night in a row. He had 75
saves on the weekend. Russ Monteith was the offensive star of the
weekend, with 3 goals and 2 assists. The line of Monteith, Troy
Stevens, and Chris Ford is really playing well right now, and was
responsible for the majority of Union's goals this weekend.

The win gives Union a bit larger cushion in 10th place, with a 3-point
lead over 11th place Yale. The Dutchmen are now 4-9-1 in the league,
8-9-2 overall. St. Lawrence is now 6-8-0 in the ECAC, 8-14-0 overall.
Union will look to move up another spot or 2 in the standings when
they play Vermont and Dartmouth at home next weekend.
