Next year the WCHA will have vitually an even spit between NHL and Olympic size sheets.  BSU, and Nebraska Omaha play on NHL size rinks and UMD will move into their new rink in December, and that will also be NHL size.

Subject: Rink Sizes

The ESPN-U announcers for the Vermont-Wisconsin game were talking about rink size, particulary as it related to how the two teams played.  That led me to wonder about the distribution of rink sizes in college hockey.  Based on what I found, it seems that WCHA teams are indeed more used to playing on international-sized sheets.  (An international sheet is defined as 30 meters wide, so it's actually just a hair less than 100 feet.  Wisconsin's sheet is the closest to this in size.)

Here they are, extracted from USCHO and a couple of other sources:

200x85  40
200x100 8
200x90  5

And the outliers:
190x85  1  (Minnesota-Duluth (WCHA)) (Wasn't the old Boston Garden rink somewhere in this range?)
200x87  1  (Boston College (Hockey East))
200x95  1  (Massachusetts (Hockey East))
200x97  1  (Wisconsin (WCHA))
204x87  1  (Harvard (ECAC))

By conference, they break out like this:

Atlantic Hockey: 200x85 (9), 200x90
CCHA: 200x85 (10), 200x100 (2)
CHA: 200x85 (4)
ECAC: 200x85(10), 200x90, 204x87
Hockey East: 200x85 (4), 200x87, 200x90(3), 200x95, 200x100
WCHA: 190x85, 200x85 (3), 200x97, 200x100 (5)
