HOCKEY FALLS TO PLYMOUTH STATE IN OT, 6-5

NEW BEDFORD, MA-Freshman defenseman Richie Zobak (Evergreen Park, IL/Bay State Breakers) scored his second goal of the game 3:55 into overtime to give visiting Plymouth State a 6-5 overtime victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team in a Massachusetts College Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Thursday evening.

Zobak’s shot from the point hit traffic in front and deflected past UMass Dartmouth senior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) to give PSU the victory.

Each team had scored twice in the third period. Junior forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) gave UMD a 4-3 lead when he deflected home a shot by junior defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) for a power play goal at 7:55 of the third period. Sophomore defenseman Jake Curtin (Concord, NH/Walpole Express) tied the score when he one-timed home a shot from the face-off circle for a power play goal at 8:44. Senior forward Aaron Blades (Chino, CA/Cushing Academy) put UMD ahead when he flipped a rebound off the glass past PSU senior goaltender Aaron Runner (Alpharetta, GA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) at 12:10, but senior forward Chris Chambers (Crofton, MD/Boston Harborwolves) tied it for the Panthers at 5-5 with a power play goal at 15:50.

The Panthers emerged from a five-goal first period with a 3-2 lead. A power play goal by Zobak broke a 2-2 tie with 23 seconds remaining in the first period.

The Corsairs had come back to tie the score after falling behind, 2-0. Sophomore forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) cut PSU’s lead in half when he flipped home the rebound of a shot by sophomore forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) with the Corsairs on the power play at 15:21. Dudley struck again less than three minutes later, scoring off another rebound of a shot by Owens at 18:06.

The Panthers took an early lead when freshman forward Alex Cottle (West Chester, PA/Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) banged home the rebound of a shot by senior forward Chris Chambers (Crofton, MD/Boston Harborwolves) at 5:14 of the first period.. PSU increased their lead when freshman forward Tim Visich (Mount Pleasant, MI/Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) fired home a one-timer from the right face-off circle at 11:10.
Only one goal was scored in the second period. Freshman forward Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, MA/ Springfield Jr. Falcons) tied the score with his first goal of the season at 12:35. Bronner shoveled home the rebound of a shot by Owens with UMass Dartmouth enjoying a two-man advantage.

“The was the puck bounced tonight is the way it’s bounced all season for us,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We had a pretty good effort. We’re just having a hard time getting a win.”

UMass Dartmouth out shot Plymouth State, 39-27. Dryjowicz-Burek made 21 saves for the Corsairs, while Runner made 34 for the Pan thers.

UMD dropped to 5-9-1 and 1-7-1 in MASCAC play with the defeat, while Plymouth State improved to 9-6-0 and 6-3-0 in conference play with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Worcester State Saturday. The Panthers will visit Franklin Pierce Saturday.
