From what I have been told by my brother at home in Montreal is that the
sequence of events involving Patrick Roy and the disputed goal were not
quite as they were described to the readers of the listserv. What
apparently happened was that Roy was hit below the helmet by a passing
Nordique's stick. He threw off his helmet and was holding his chin, and
the referee did not call the play. To Roy's surprise (and I assume that
the play was still going on at this point), one of the Nordiques broke
away from the pack, and was heading towards the net, in control of the
puck. Roy scrambled to put his mask back on, as well as his glove, but
was not fully equipped by the time the Nordique let the shot go, and the
goal counted. Roy was of course furious, and he skated out at the ref
yelling, but to no avail.
If this was indeed the case, and I can't be completely sure because my
brother has misinformed me on several occasions, but if this was the case,
it is the ref who is at fault, not the centerman, nor Roy.
If anyone has seen the highlights, and can confirm any facts, please let
me know. I am also curious as to who the referee was...
