Gophers forward Dan Welch ran out of chances Friday when he was
released from the team because of academic shortcomings.
Coach Don Lucia let Welch go after grades posted Friday indicated he
would not maintain his eligibility. Lucia said there is a very slim chance
Welch could fulfill his academic contract, but the possibility is so remote
he chose to cut him immediately. Welch, a second-line winger and key
part of the special teams, had five goals and five assists in 18 games.
