The game was much more interesting and entertaining that Friday night's
game, and Wisconsin played a very solid game in all areas. North
Dakota's defense is weak, and by putting a lot of pressure on the
defense, Wisconsin was able to get the ND offense off their game.
Combining that with solid defense in their zone, and the Badgers
recorded their third victory over the Souix this season, remaining one
point behind Northern Michigan for second place. Northern has finished
their season, and Wisconsin hosts St. Cloud State next weekend.

Jon Michelizze played very solid in nets for Wisconsin, in his second
start this season. As can be seen from the box score, the Badgers got a
lot of shots on goal, and had several powerplay opportunities.

Although there was once again a lot of rough stuff, the game didn't get
out of hand. Referee Brian Ricci called a lot of matching roughings,
but didn't try and keep the penalties even -- in the second period, he
called Duberman while Ward was already in the box for the Souix, in the
third North Dakota got called for four straight penalties, including two
at 10:30, when Shriner tried to start something after the whistle had
blown for McKinnon's penalty (I think I got those in the right order).
Now, if the calls had gone the other way, I may be complaining, but I
think they were good calls. Ricci let a lot of little stuff go, but not
anything that really involved the play, and not anything that could lead
to a fight, if he saw it. I don't think he did a good job (in fact, I
don't think he made any effort at all) to keep the game moving. It
seemed like every face off again had a conference at the bench, a lot of
delaying, and then a lot of delay getting set, once everyone was on the
ice.

Notes:

Looking at the WCHA standings, only Minnesota, Northern Michigan, and
Wisconsin have winning league records. Only four point separate fourth
(Colorado College, 13-14-3, 29 pts) from eighth (North Dakota and St.
Cloud, 12-17-1, 25 pts).

Wisconsin Coach Jeff Sauer is making a strong push to widen the ice at
the Dane County Coliseum. It is currently 200x85, and could be widened
to 200x97 or 200x97.5. Some seats would move, and some seats would
probably be lost, but it sounds like they are serious about it.

Coach Sauer said on the pregame interview that all the penalty stats for
this season should be thrown out. The top three teams in the WCHA have
the most penalty minutes -- which he attributes to the strategies of the
rest of the league in facing them. He then went on the express concern
about his team taking stupid penalties that they don't need.
