AWARDS PRESENTED AT HOCKEY BANQUET APRIL 11

Junior center Brad Konik (Bloomington, MN/Kennedy) has been named captain
of the 1995-96 Harvard men's ice hockey team. Konik will be the 100th
captain in the illustrious history of Harvard hockey. He just completed a
strong comeback season, having seen his first varsity action since
suffering a severe knee injury early in the 1992-93 campaign and spending
the following year away from Harvard. A strong two-way player, Konik
appeared regularly on the Crimson special teams units, including a penalty
kill that ranked among the nation's best. He finished fourth on the team in
scoring with 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points, including four power
play goals and a team-high three shorthanded tallies. Konik sparked the
Crimson to perhaps its most thrilling win of the season on Jan. 7 at
Clarkson when he tied the game late in the third period, then set up the
gamewinner in overtime of the 4-3 triumph. The Ivy League coaches selected
him as honorable mention All-Ivy League.

Senior forward Steve Martins (Gatineau, QUE/Choate) received the John Tudor
Memorial Cup, "awarded annually to the most valuable member of the Harvard
hockey team, determined not by ability alone, but by the qualities of
sportsmanship, leadership and team cooperation. Finally, and most
importantly, the recipient must have that vague quality which John Tudor
called, 'the old come through in the pinch.'" During his four years at
Harvard, Martins compiled an impressive list of honors and accomplishments:
he was named All-America, All-ECAC, All New England and All-Ivy League
(twice); he was chosen as the ECAC and Ivy League Player of the Year, the
Best New England Forward and the Ivy League Rookie of the Year; and his
career points total of 139 is 14th all-time at Harvard. This season,
Martins led the team in goals (15), assists (23), points (38) and power
play goals (7). He also notched two shorthanded strikes and was
instrumental in Harvard's 86.5-percent penalty kill efficiency, the best in
a decade. He finished his collegiate hockey career by assisting on a goal
in the East Team's 6-2 victory at the Shrine Hockey Classic. Last season,
Martins shared the Tudor Cup with Sean McCann '94 and is the seventh
two-time recipient of the award since its dedication in 1930.

The Ralph "Cooney" Weiland Award was presented to senior defenseman Bryan
Lonsinger (Caldwell, NJ/Choate). The award is given "To the member or
members of the Harvard varsity hockey team whose devotion to the game has
repeatedly been evidenced by aggressive and spirited play and by selfless
contribution to the total team effort representative of 'Cooney's type of
hockey player.'" Awarded the Angier Trophy for general improvement last
year, Lonsinger continued to progress as a player and team leader this
season. He was second among defensemen in scoring with a career-best 17
points on eight goals and nine assists, including five power-play tallies.
His controlled, level-headed play is evidenced by his 12 minutes in
penalties. In fact, in 111 career games, Lonsinger spent only 36 minutes in
the penalty box. His impact was most profound, however, on defense, where
he became the dependable leader of a relatively inexperienced blue line
corps that rated among the league's best by the end of the season. He was
named honorable mention All-Ivy League.

Junior center Kirk Nielsen (Grand Rapids, MN/Grand Rapids) earned the
Donald Angier Hockey Trophy, "awarded annually to the player showing the
greatest general improvement during the year." This was truly a
breakthrough year for Nielsen, as he more than doubled his career scoring
output. Nielsen tallied 13 goals and seven assists for 20 points, tied for
sixth on the team. A strong skater with a powerful shot, he was a crucial
member of the power play, registering three man-advantage goals, and also
picked up a shorthanded score. His three game-winning goals, two of them
coming in one-goal contests, led the Crimson.

The George Percy Award was presented to freshman defenseman Jeremiah
McCarthy (Belmont, MA/Belmont Hill). The award is "presented to a member of
the freshman class for enthusiasm, sportsmanship, team spirit and loyalty
most characteristic of George Percy." McCarthy played in his first game
Nov. 19 (vs. Colgate) and earned a permanent spot on defense two games
later (Nov. 26 vs. Union). He played in 25 games, scoring three goals and
six assists for nine points. A frequent member of the power play unit, he
tallied two power plays goals. The highlight of his season unquestionably
occurred Dec. 22 at Alaska-Fairbanks. With the score tied, 2-2, in the
third period, McCarthy exploded for two goals in a 1:27 span to give
Harvard a 4-2 lead. Then he tallied again later in the period as Harvard
won, 9-2. The hat trick was the only such feat performed by a Crimson
player this season, and McCarthy was named ECAC Rookie of the Week for this
achievement.
