 =========================================================================
The Minutemen showed their inexperience this evening, as they
fell 4-3 to Northeastern. UMass led 2-0 after one and 3-1 with 4:30 to go
in the third, but allowed three unanswered Husky goals (all off of major
defensive lapses).
Dave Kilduff, UMass' third different starter in a row, played a
solid game and took home the No. 2 star. After a slow start, his
counterpart, NU's Mike Veisor played a solid game as well.
The Minutemen opened up very apathetically. Northeastern had
several quality opportunities stimied by Kilduff in the early going.
On a break, Sal Manganaro drove halfway to net, drawing the
attention of the Husky defense as well as Veisor. This left Mike Evans
alone on the doorstep, who put manganaro's pass into the open net, for a
1-0 UMass lead at the 9:55 mark.
Suddenly reenergized, the Minutemen made it 2-0 at 14:46 as Tom
Perry collected the richchet, off the end boards, of a Dale Hooper slapper
that had missed the net, and put it past Veisor.
UMass was all fired up as the second started, but NU got the
first tally. The puck was tied up against the back of the net, and Dave
Kiduff was caught behind the goal trying to free it, or force a faceoff.
Kilduff, along with defensemen Jaynen Rissling, and Tiger Holland could
not get Referee Scott Leavitt to blow the whistle, and after a mad
scramble it eventually found it's way to Campbell, all alone in front,
for a powerplay goal.
Warren Norris extended the Umass lead to 3-1 off of a pair of
pretty passes from Jon Jacques and Blair Wagar. The pair of cross-ice
passes in the offensive zone loosened up the NU D enough to get Norris
untouched in the slot.
UMass squandered the lead though as their inexperience let it
slip away. Just 17 seconds later, as Tomas Persson had a 1-2 against Mike
gaffney and Mike Evans, the darndest thing happened. Evans and Gaffney
collided, leaving Persson with a clean break away, which he successfully
converted, making the score 3-2 at the second intermission.
The thrid opened up with much intensity on both sides. Both teams had
opportunities in the third, but the game was
decided during a 4x4 situation caused by coincidential minors on Perry
and Hart Webb.
After Viesor made a good save on a UMass 2-1, Scott Campbell
fired a breakout pass up to Tom Parlon who carried the puck to the top of
the right faceoff circle, where he sent it over to a streaking Francois
Bouchard, who fired it hard and on the ice, just inside the far post.
That goal took almost all of the wind out of UMass' sails, and
what was left left 1:06 later. Still in the 4x4 situation, a complete
neutral zone breakdown enabled McGillis to fire the puck up to Collett
who had a 2 on 0. Kilduff had no chance and Collett wristed the game
winner past Kilduff's glove.
A loss tonight would have drstically hurt NU's NCA hopes, and
they wouldn't let that happen, as they came out all fired up for the
third. Ben Smith's team never panicked and came out after the second
intermission determined to win it, which they did. A few years down the
road, UMass would have taken home the W, but niot tonight. Their
youth showed in the Gaffney/Evans collision that led to the second goal,
as well as the breakdown that resulted in the game winner. Kilduff had a
solid game in the net for UMass, who's goaltending has been the largest
positive this season.
The two teams will round out their regular seasons, Saturday
night, same time, same place (Matthews Arena, 7pm)
