BU and Lowell played again on Saturday night at Tully Forum and
the tradition of unusual games continued. Tonight it included
a great individual effort for a goal that should have been
whistled for an offsides, a goal into a vacated net and a
shootout with a twist.

This game BU scored first, at the 3:33 mark of the first, as
the Terriers controlled play for the opening minutes. Joubert
won a face-off outside the Lowell blueline and passed it back
to Coleman who dumped it into the Lowell zone. Nicholishen
gathered the puck behind Lowell's net and made a blind clear
that Rausch got at the boards and skated towards the net. He
whiffed on his shot, but the puck deflected off a Lowell skate
back onto his stick and he got a solid shot on goal. Lindsay
made the save but left the rebound for Joubert to shoot into
the net on his stick side.

BU controlled much of the play for the next 13 minutes,
including four powerplays, but they could not get another goal.
Late in the period Lowell controlled the puck in the BU zone
and Dartsch passed the puck out from the corner to Bullock who
made a perfect pass to an uncovered Henderson at the top of the
BU crease and he knocked it home to tie the score at the 17:00
minute mark. Lowell went ahead just 53 seconds later as
Bullock got the puck at his blueline and skated to just inside
the BU blueline and made another perfect pass, this time to Ed
Campbell, who was rushing up center ice. Campbell got the puck
just over inside the blueline, cut to the left face-off circle
and blasted a bullet low to the glove side of Herlofsky and
into the far side of the net.

With time in the period running out Linna stopped the puck
inside the Lowell blueline but Dartsch knocked him over and
Henderson picked up the loose puck and rushed up the right side
with Bullock in center ice, making a 2 on 1 against Doug Wood.

Herlofsky and Wood both played Henderson, but he blasted the
puck past Derek with 10 second left to make it 3-1 for Lowell.

BU came out at the start of the second period and played well,
shaking off the last three minutes of the first. BU went on
the powerplay at the 1:32 mark as Bullock was whistled to the
box for cross-checking. BU did a good job of controlling the
puck for the first minute of the powerplay, but were unable to
score. Lowell finally got the puck out of the zone after one
minute and kept BU from setting up again for the remainder of
the powerplay.

At about the five minute mark Chris O'Sullivan took a pass
Grier and in center ice on the near side and skated down the
left side with Steve Thornton skating down the slot for a 2 on
1. O'Sullivan made a fine pass from the top of the face-off
circle to Thornton, who snapped of a quick shot which beat
Lindsay on the glove side, making it 3-2 at 5:14

BU could not get the equalizer, as both teams skated up and
down for the next 8 minutes. Lowell increased their lead back
to 2 goals at 13:25 of the second when Bill Riga scored on a
give and go. Riga skated down the slot and passed the puck to
Shannon Basaraba in front of Doug Wood, who went down as he
tried to turn and cover Basaraba. Basaraba passed the puck
back to Riga behind the fallen Wood and Riga knocked the puck
into the open side of the net.

A minute later BU went on the powerplay again, as Neil Donovan
was called for interference, and his time BU took advantage,
scoring at 15:49 to make it 4-3. Thornton won a face-off to
the right of Lindsay and passed the puck back to Linna at the
left point. Linna passed it to Coleman at the top of the slot
who passed it back to Linna, who again passed it to Coleman.
Coleman blasted a shot on goal which Lindsay made the stop on,
but Mike Grier was waiting at the top of the crease and he
flipped in the rebound over Lindsay.

Lowell responded 18 seconds later, as they won the center-ice
face-off and David Dartsch skated into the BU zone with the
puck, cut across at the top of the slot and put a shot on net
as he was off-balance and falling. Shawn Bates was tying up
Bullock and rode him into the crease where the rebound went off
him and into the net. BU closed out the scoring in the second
and made it a one goal game for the third time with 1:08 left
in the period. Bob Lachance took the puck from Kelleher and
skated up the right side deep into the Lowell zone. Bill
Pierce drove to the net with Nicholishen in front of him (but
his back was to the play) and Lachance was able to pass to
Pierce, who redirected the into the net on Lindsay's stick
side.

The third period was evenly played for the first 5:22, when
Kelleher took a tripping penalty to give Lowell just their
third powerplay of the night. With Lowell controlling play
Bullock got the puck deep along the far boards and made another
perfect pass to Campbell, who was in the slot and put a hard
shot on net. Herlofsky made a nice save, but went down.
Donovan got his stick on the rebound and attempted to flip it
over Herlofsky, but Derek got a leg on it. Then Jeff Daw got
the second rebound and flipped it over Herlofsky and into the
net at 6:51 giving Lowell their fourth 2 goal lead, 6-4.

BU put immediate pressure on Lowell and it payed off at 8:29
Bates made a rush from behind the BU net up the right side to
the BU blueline where he cut left into center ice through the
neutral zone, across the Lowell blueline, then he cut left
again, going around Nicholishen and from the center of the left
face-off circle made a great pass to a wide open Pierce at the
right side of the crease, who put into the open side of the
net.

Just 28 seconds later BU made sure Lowell would not open up
another 2 goal lead, as the Terriers tied it. Jeff Kealty took
the puck from behind the BU net and skated to the BU blueline,
where he made a pass to Bates, who was rushing through center
ice. Bates took the puck and skated to the top of the right
face-off circle, where he cut to the net, stopped at the crease
and backhanded the puck behind Lindsay into the net. It was a
very pretty play and it was a great goal, but it never should
have happened. Two Lowell players had forced a BU player into
the Lowell zone before Bates even received the puck and skated
into the zone. The play should have been whistled dead at that
moment, but one of the officials blew the call. While the BU
player did not touch the puck, he was tangled up with two
Lowell players, leaving Bates on a one on one. I also did not
see Lowell did not protest the goal.

After some more up and down play which BU was taking control
of, Bates got another goal as Doug Wood dumped the puck off the
boards and out of the BU zone. The puck deflected off the
boards to the top of the slot in the Lowell zone and Lindsay
left the net to clear the puck. Bates was rushing hard from
Lindsay's left, so he attempted to clear the puck to his right,
but he did not see Paul Botto coming from that side and the
puck ended up in Botto's skates as he went past Lindsay. The
puck ended up just behind Botto and before he could turn to get
the puck Bates tapped it into the vacated net at 13:14, giving
BU a 7-6 lead.

A minute and a half later O'Sullivan was called for hooking and
Lowell went on their fourth powerplay of the night. BU did a
good job of killing the penalty for almost a minute and a half,
but a poor clearing shot ended up on Lindsay's stick and he
made a quick pass to Bullock at the BU blueline as BU made a
line change. Bullock took to or three steps and coasted to the
top of the right face-off circle, where he unleashed a wicked
slapshot. Herlofsky started to go down early and allowed the
puck to go through the five-hole into the net, tying the game
at 16:09. Derek was very mad at himself for allowing the easy
goal and slammed the butt of his stick onto the ice.

BU pressured Lowell for the rest of the game and overtime
trying to get another goal, but were unable to put the puck
past Lindsay. Jack even pulled Herlofsky with 3 seconds left
in the third when there was a face-off to the right of Lindsay.
Jack pulled Derek again with 2 seconds left in overtime and a
face-off to the right of Lindsay.

In the shootout Jacques Joubert went first, as BU was the
visiting team, but he did not score. Greg Bullock went next
for Lowell and he did his 180 backhander to score. Mike
Prendergast then when for BU but could not score. Neither
could Christian Sbrocca who went for Lowell. Ken Rausch put
the puck over the net and Bill Riga then scored giving Lowell a
2-0 lead. Steve Thornton scored to keep BU alive, and Mike
Nicholishen was stopped by Herlofsky. It then all came down to
Mike Grier and he was stooped by Lindsay to give Lowell the 2-1
shootout win and 3 points for the game.

Random observations: BU was much better not taking penalties,
but the short-handed unit still allowed 2 goals on only 4
chances. The powerplay had another shortage, as they only
scored 1 goal on 7 chances, including a 5x3 for 48 seconds in
the first. Special teams continue to play a *very* important
role and BU is failing badly in that area. BU's defense did
play better than Friday night, but still needs much work.

There are some good signs. BU's offense looks as it may be
able to score many goals this year. I am also very pleased to
see that BU does not give up when they are way down and can
comeback to take the lead. Friday they scored 7 straight goals
to take the win, but Saturday BU showed true grit. Three times
BU closed the Lowell lead to one goal, only to see them open
back up to two goals. The Terriers did not quit and the fourth
time BU got two quick goals to tie the game, before taking the
lead a little over four minutes later. The game was also on
the road, making BU's determination even more impressive. If
the defense and goaltending come around BU may be as good as
people thought they would be.

UML looked good again tonight. They continued to press the BU
defense and often had an open man around the BU net. Greg
Bullock and Jeff Daw again lead the way against BU. Bullock
had this second straight 5 point game against BU, getting 2
goals and 3 assists. BU is plain unable to stop him. Daw had
a quieter night, but he still got a goal and an assist against
BU. Thankfully BU only sees Lowell one more time in the
regular season.

On the injury front, Jay Pandolfo is still out with an injury.
According to both the Boston Globe and NESN it is an abdominal
muscle pull. Another source states that BU's SID states it is
a groin injury. In any event NESN last night listed him out
for the next 7 to 10 days. That means he is questionable for
the games versus Northeastern. Mike Sylvia is also out with a
shoulder injury received in the Lowell-BU game at Walter Brown
Arena Friday night.

The referees called 15 penalties, 6 on BU and 9 on Lowell.
There were two sets on coincidentals, giving Lowell 4
powerplays and BU. Jim Fitzgerald called 8 penalties, 3 on BU
and 5 on Lowell, while Bob Fowkes called 6 penalties, 3 on each
team. One penalty was called by both referees and each referee
called one set of coincidental penalties.
