Interesting topic, and certainly worthy of an in-depth discussion
on the list.

Heard around the rink: There are only 400 total scholarships given
out in college hockey in the U.S. This means on average on 100 new per
year, with, perhaps, 40% going to Canadien SA's. The same discussion
included the statement that there are more scholarships given out for
sailing each year!!!!

Second, for those awarding need-based aid, how is the need calculated
and by whom? The Ivies have had a central clearing house for this sort of
thing, and then got successfully sued. Do the individual institutions now
do their own calculations? Also, many institutions give out academic
scholarships (which are not need-based) true? How are these awarded and
bookkept?

I have a couple of friends who graduated from one of the institutions
mentioned in posts who do not give scholarships, period. These friends
played football, and the institution has an oustanding record in football.
The whole team, according to my friends, was on scholarship. Not 100%
rides, but REALLY substantial portions of expenses. How on earth is
that reconciled with the public position? The entrance requirements for
this school are very high and competitive, so I suppose anyone who gets
in can be awarded an "academic" scholarship.:-)

I know we have people in the know lurking on the net. Let's hear
from them, even if they have to speak in code!!
