The third time's a charm. And for The University of Maine, the
third period has had a history of being a charm for head coach
Shawn Walsh, for Walsh stresses the importance of endurance to
his players.

Sparked by a Mike Latendresse goal 4:38 into the third period
that broke a 1-1 tie, Walsh's troops managed to skate out of
the doldrums and pour it on, en route to a 5-1 thrashing of
the Boston University Terriers at Maine's Harold Alfond Sports
Arena Saturday night.

The Terriers' Mike Pomichter opened the scoring 3:27 into the
first period with 13 seconds remaining on a power play. Tim
Lovell, however, answered with a goal for Maine 43 seconds
later to knot the contest 1-1.

BU picked up where it left off from Friday night's 5-3 win,
keeping the puck away from Maine's offensive line and pester-
ing the Maine defense. Maine's passing game struggled through
the rest of the first period and through the entire second
period, as numerous scoring opportunities were either inter-
cepted by BU defenders, broken up by BU defenders, or simply
squandered by bad passes.

The start of the third period didn't look any different for
Maine, or BU, as both teams came off the face off sluggish.
But when Latendresse took a pass from Dave MacIsaac, skated
into the BU zone alone and faked to the left, only to fade
to the right to push the puck over the red line, the Black
Bears awoke from their hibernation. BU suddenly found it-
self in Maine's shoes as Maine took control of the puck and
wore down the Terrier defense, to the point where BU head
coach Jack Parker pulled his goalie, only to watch Brad Pur-
die make him pay to make it 4-1. Re-inserting the goalie
didn't help, as Chuck Texeira scored 14 seconds later.
