I apologize for the NHL question, but it relates to a recent H-L rules
discussion.

During the 1986 playoffs, Calgary eliminated the two-time defending
champion Oilers in a seven game Smythe Division series when Steve
Smith's pass deflected off of Grant Fuhr's skate into the Edmonton
net. *As I recall*, Calgary dumped the puck into the Oiler zone then
proceeding to make a line change. Fuhr stopped the puck behing the
net, Smith retrieved it and attempted to make a cross-ice breakout
pass to a forward near the blue line as he rounded the net. However,
his pass traveled through the goal crease and the puck hit Fuhr who
was returning to the net from the opposite direction. (Technically,
his pass didn't travel THROUGH the goal crease, because it ended up
in the net! :-) Anyway, I believe there was one Calgary player just
in or just out of the Edmonton zone near the blue line. He was
credited with the goal. I don't know or remember if he was the
player who shot the puck behind the net, but my memory tells me that
he was credited with the goal because he was the offensive player
closest to the play.

Am I remembering this correctly or was it the last player who touched
the puck (Calgary player) who received the goal?

Regardless, Steve Smith will always be remembered as the man who cost
the Oilers 5 straight Cups (1984-1988).

Thanks.
