Greetings,

A few months ago the President of UND, Kendall Baker, announced that
the Blackhawk indian head logo used by the hockey team would be removed.
It was reported that the Blackhawk symbol was "borrowed" from the
NHL team Chicago Blackhawks. The symbol will be replaced with a
generic green indian head. On top of that all fixtures at Englestad
Arena will have the Blackhawk symbol removed.

It's only a matter of time before the university drops the nickname
"Fighting Sioux". This has been a real hot issue here on campus. UND's
nickname could be changed back to the Flickertails, which was the original
name back in the '30s.

Another interesting topic is on the UND mascot, Thunder the Bleacher Creature.
Thunder is a 6 foot pink and green gorilla who attends all UND sporting
events. Indian students on campus are upset about Thunder because they say
it has a negative image of indians. Kinda strange since Thunder is a
Gorilla not an indian!

It's just too darn hard to any compromise! No matter what anyone does someone
will always find offense.

Just my 2 cents!

Rob
