I know that hockey programs are trying to crack down on people who throw
things on the ice (e.g., oranges, wildlife, etc...) but this seems a bit
extreme! I doubt that hats are going to cause injury to anyone and they are
pretty easy to clean up, so what's the problem? Throwing hats to celebrate
a hat-trick is a time-honored tradition at hockey games. Stop by Boston
Garden any time Neely nets 3 and you'll see tens (perhaps up to 100)
hats fired onto the ice as part of the festivities. I realize that a
blanket policy against throwing objects onto the ice is good, but don't
you think that an exception could be made in this case (as I doubt Michigan
instituted the law to prevent a few hats from being thrown after a hat-trick).
