I cannot explain it but have been meaning to ask this question myself.  The
three RIT home games I have been to (ECAC West, Div III) have all been
officiated by two refs and one linesman.  In past years, there have only been
two officials, except for tournaments/playoffs, in which you had the
traditional two linesmen and one referee.  I thought that this was the new way
of doing things in all games - After all, RIT is >only< Div. III hockey.  8-)
But from Charlie's question, I get the impression this may just be something in
the East, maybe even just the ECAC.
