The "New Emphasis" is dead in the WCHA. There were some touchy calls being
made early in the season, but we've had WCHA supervisor Ron Foyt in here
for the Gophers' last 3 home games (a nonconference game against Univ of
Calgary and a series against UMD) and HE certainly isn't calling anything
very close. (In a heated in-state rivalry like Minn-UMD, he probably
should have exercised a little more control early in the series to prevent
some of the rough stuff that developed Saturday night.)

Doug Woog said that the close reffing in the WCHA early in the season hurt his
team in the series against Michigan. The CCHA referees for that series weren't
calling things nearly as close as the WCHA did early in the season and the
Gophers weren't prepared for the different style of play.
