First, the overall record should only be for the regular season, as
the award is voted on before the playoffs begin (and awarded before
the HE Championship Weekend).
Second, Greg got his BU season record quite confused, as he gave the
1988-98 record for the 1990-91 record. The actual BU records (if
anyone really cares):

So, in reality, Jack Parker won in 1992 despite his team dropping
from 3rd to 4th, winning 3 fewer league games and the same number of
regular season games overall. It is likely that he won because he
was that he was able to mold a young team that lost 13 players into a
contender, one that equalled the win total in the very highly
talented 1990-91 team (of which 4 players are currently in the NHL
and 2 others played for a season or more in the NHL, including one
who was on a Stanley Cup winning team). The 1991-92 team lost the
top two, 4 of the top 5, and 8 of the top 10 scorers from 1990-91.
It also lost 5 defensemen and one of the two regular goalies.
Mind you, the freshman class on that team was pretty good itself, as
it included Rich Brennan, Derek Herlofsky, Kaj Linna, J.P. McKersie,
Mike Prengergast, Ken Rausch, and Steve Thornton, all who won the
Hockey East and NCAA titles as seniors (Mike Pomichter was also a
member of that class, but he left BU after his junior year).
So the overal and league team records are only a part of winning the
Cocah of the Year Award.
