I was reading something earlier about how the Twin Cities media
basically ignores college hockey in the area. Nothing could be furthur
from the truth up here in Anchorage. Alaska-Anchorage hockey games are
always on the front page of the sports section in both newspapers.
There are usually two articles on the game and two full color photos
in each of the newspapers. In a city of 250,000, a sellout crowd of
6400 people has seen each of the 4 home games so far this season. With
the Seawolves being a basic shoo-in to post-season play, their appeal
in the city is still rising. It is getting harder and harder to get
tickets to the games.
I think that UAAs popularity is mostly due to the fact that
there is no other team in Alaska that draws national attention during the
winter. No NBA, NFL, or NHL teams are based within 500 miles of here.
This makes UAA hockey the only spectator sport for miles around, literally.
As far as seeing hockey goes, the main SportsChannels satellite is below
the viewing horizon up north here, making St. Loius Blues hockey on Fox
the only hockey that a fan can see (unless you go to a sportsbar with it's
own satellite dish). Last year, an agreement was made between the local
cable company and SportsChannel in San Francisco to broadcast some games
here but the agreement fell though this year.
As for the Seawolves chances of doing well in post-season play
this year, it looks good. They are 4-0-0 on the year with all of the
games being decided by more than one goal. Paul Krake, the Seawolves
netminder, has over a .900 save percentage and the rest of the team
looks really sharp. Look for them soon on a poll near you!
