An extremely frustrating opener for the SLU Skating Saints who
dominated play through much of the game but failed to put the puck in the
net despite many opportunities. Brian Kapeller opened the scoring on his
first shot as a collegian with a wrist shot from the right circle just
after coming over the blue line. BC's first goal by Mike McCarthy was a
dribbler from the right circle which caromed off the inside of
Spagnoletti's right skate and came to rest just over the line at the left
post. Todd Hall, another freshman, scored BC's second goal after a
clearing attempt was deflected and he lifted a shot over several bodies on
the ice in front of the goal. I'm not sure how they found two BC players
to get assists on that one.
SLU switched goalies in a planned move when they went on a power play
with 9:23 to go in the 2nd period. Marc Beran stole the puck for BC a
minute later, came in along the goal line, and stuffed the puck through the
new goalie Brady Giroux.
SLU's Spencer Meany tipped in a slap from the point on a power play
near the start of the third period for the only pretty goal of the night.
SLU appeared to have plenty of momentum at this time and it appeared that
the tying goal was inevitable. Greg Carvel took exception to a BC player
removing his (Greg's) helmet while play was still going a few minutes later
and the usually mild-mannered junior got into a rare fight. SLU's John
Roderick, got the "dumbest play so far this year award" by waiting until
things calmed down and then taking a shot at the BC player while the ref
was still standing there sorting things out. He got 4:00 + 10:00 while
everyone expected him to get the boot for the game. Curiously, Carvel
escaped with no penalty at all, must be an advantage to being mild-
mannered. SLU kept up tremendous pressure over the last part of the
period, but just couldn't get another goal to go in.

Impressions of BC: They are probably going to have a lot of difficulty
scoring goals this season. At no time during the game did they generate
any sort of sustained offensive attack. I can't recall any time when they
made two consecutive passes successfully in their own zone. It's not clear
whether this was due to a weak offense or excellent defense, but I doubt
that SLU's defense is that good. The only BC player who stood out was
junior Marc Beran who scored the third goal on an excellent individual
effort and nearly got another shorthanded goal on a similar play in the
third period - about the only time Giroux was seriously tested. They are
likely to be in big trouble tomorrow night at Clarkson. Singewald looked
OK in goal, although he benefited from SLU's inaccuracy and some friendly
posts. He did make several nice saves in the latter part of the third
period and almost never let the puck back out on a rebound.

Impressions of SLU: The big question mark at the start of the season was
goaltending and we got few answers in this game. Neither SLU goalie was
forced to make many tough saves - several of the recorded "saves" were long
caroms off the boards that would have been icing if not on net. They both
let in a "stoppable" shot. SLU controlled the puck in their offensive end
very well. They appear to have three strong lines with no clearly dominant
"first" line. Lee Albert started with two Canton natives (Carvel and
Wells), leading returning wingers Eric and Martin LaCroix played with
Michael Allain, and Mike Lappin centered the third line out with Spencer
Meany and freshman Lapeller. Daniel LaPerriere stood out on defense. For
a first game of the season, the passing was decent and they consistently
out-dueled BC in the corners and behind the net. If only they had gotten a
few more shots in the net ...

I would imagine that the Saint players are very frustrated now and they
have to wait two weeks before they get a chance to play again (at Lowell
and Northeastern). Although some fans expressed a "Not bad for the first
game, at least its not a league loss" attitude, it's clear that the players
were aware that this was more than just a "preseason" exhibition and, after
last year's NCAA (non)experience they know that these early games can be
more important than the league schedule.
