My sophomore son has received a couple of letters that begin "NCAA
regulations prohibit us from contacting prospective student athletes
prior to September 1 of their junior year. However . . ." The
letters go on to state that schools are permitted to send
students a questionnaire earlier than this. So recruiting during the
junior year is possible.

As to Spehar, he is very quick and has an awesome shot. But he
doesn't play defense at all. He floats in neutral ice, waiting for a
long pass. In the Minnesota state tournament championship game
against Moorhead, he never skated against Moorhead's first line, and
from the middle of the second period rarely skated against Moorhead's
second line. But that's another story.
