Well, some would argue that there IS no rationale behind it. To add to what
Lisa Sweeney posted, the Ivy League schools are limited to 26 regular-season
games (the ECAC as a whole has a limit of 30). Also, the Ivies start on-ice
practice about two weeks(?) before the start of the regular season, while
the non-Ivies (along with the rest of the NCAA) can start as early as
October 1.

I'm sure this is another inaccuracy from TSN's hockey issue, but they list a
schedule for Brown that has the Bruins playing 30 (!) games. Three of them
take place in Alaska and thus "don't count" toward the regular-season
limit -- but that would still leave Brown with 27, putting them one over the
Ivies' self-imposed limit. Hmmm... well, one of these days, I'll lay my
hands on a composite schedule and see if this got sorted out...

LET'S GO RED!!

"What will happen to this man's father?"
"This man's father will go to Shanghai."
"Ah, there I've got you, my friend. My father died ten years ago."
"The man your mother MARRIED died ten years ago -- your father will go to
 Shanghai."
