Summary:
It was definitely not a typical night at Achilles Rink on Saturday. It
all started out with a 20 minute delay because the lights went out. Plus only 6
people showed up for the pep band. (Which is really annoying to me, but that's
another story...) The Dutchmen were playing a team that beat them 6-3 last
season. In that game they lost several players to suspensions following a
between periods brawl started when a Norwich player bumped Union goalie Ron
Kinghorn in the warmups before the 3rd period. Several key players were lost
for the upcoming weekend against Hobart (tie) and RIT (overtime loss),
including senior captain Guy Logan for 3 games. By the end of the night history
had partially repeated itself, as 7 ten-minute misconducts were handed out plus
2 game misconducts.
Once the lights came on, and the game finally started, it looked like
the type of Union hockey we are used to seeing. The Dutchmen opened up a 3-0
lead by 16:08 of the first period. Every one of the Dutchmen's passes was right
on the mark, and things were going Union's way. It looked like another rout in
the making when the teams went off for the first period break.
In the second period, Norwich managed only 5 shots on goal, but the
first one went in at 0:35. The referees allowed the game to get very physical.
The Cadets were allowed to get away with blatant penalties. A few Union scoring
opportunities were stopped by some questionable off-sides calls. The game had
become very rough, and at 17:55 of the 2nd, the first fight broke out, with
Union's Bill Railton and Norwich's John Shaw getting 10-minute misconducts. At
the end of the period, Union coach Bruce Delvanthal came onto the ice to get
all of his players into the locker room before any more fights could result.
The third period started where the second period left off. There were a
lot of non-calls which allowed the play to get more physical. Union's Jeff
Jiampetti was sent off at 3:19, and Norwich scored on that power play at 4:04
to move within one.
At 9:43, the big fights started. Three separate fights were going on.
The worst one was a 3-on-1 against Union's Terry Campbell right in front of
the Norwich bench. Since there are only 2 refs in ECAC Div 2, the third fight
went on with no interference from the referees. Union's Rich Burchill and
Norwich's Cheney fought with no gloves or helmets in a true NHL style. Both
were given game misconducts and will be suspended for their teams' next game. A
total of 54 minutes in penalties were given out at 9:43, after the officials
took over 20 minutes to sort things out. The teams ended up skating at full
strength when they finally started the game again.
Norwich had the best scoring opportunities after the brawl, including a
possible breakaway which was broken up by Union goalie Shayne White, who came
way out of the net to break up the play. White played another outstanding game
to improve his record to 6-2, and bring his goal-against average under 3. Union
finally went on a power play at 17:18 when the Cadets' Scott Thurston pulled
down Bill Railton who was coming in on Dafniotis. Union held on for the 3-2
win.
Union improves to 11-2-2 in the ECAC and 12-3-2 overall, including
6-0-1 in the last 7 games. Norwich falls to 5-12. If things go well, Union will
move to Division I and never have to face Norwich again. I'm sure no one would
mind never having another game like this one.

Union notes:
- Union was held to under 4 goals for the first time this season by the Cadets.
- Junior Craig Ferrero had his 25 game scoring streak stopped, 4 short of the
school record. Ferrero could have been awarded an assist on Union's first goal,
but the 2nd assist was given to Rick Clifford instead.
- Union continues its longest homestand of the season with a Tuesday night
matchup against Plattsburgh State at Achilles Rink.
