I wonder if schools sometimes don't do themselves in when they're
tryingto lobby for one of their players to win a prestigious award like
the Hobey Baker (or the Heisman). I'm thinking about last year's
Northern Michigan campaign to get the Hobey for Scott Beattie. Based on
his performance in his two previous years at NMU, it was certainly a
natural focal point for the Wildcat press machine. However, Scott's sr.
year turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment, compared to the
expectations. At the same time, Dallas Drake had a tremendous season to
cap off a very good career. (For that matter, so did Jim Hiller.) But,
the NMU effort went entirely for Beattie, and I don't think Drake was
ever a serious "contender."

(I'd like to quickly add that I am a tremendous Scott Beattie fan; he
was the most exciting player I've ever watched, and others on this list
have said the same thing. But he was shadowed, double-teamed, even
triple-teamed a good bit of his last season, and the point totals just
had to go down. I'm still rooting for Scott to somehow get a shot at
the NHL.)
