I must comment on Minnesota's fourth goal, officially scored unassisted by
Bobby Dustin, as it was the strangest I've seen in a while. Dustin flipped
the puck into the Wildcat zone as he crossed the red line, then skated to
the Gopher bench for a line change. Wildcat goalie Corwin Saurdiff skated
out to play the puck, but at the same time his teammate, Steve Woog (son of
Gopher coach Doug Woog) tried to bat the puck out of the air. Woog made
contact but inadvertantly set the puck bouncing toward the Northern goal;
Saurdiff had no chance to block it. It was one of those strange situations
in which each player tried to do the right thing, but the combination
didn't work out. Quoted in the Minneapolis paper, Saudiff said, "Steve
busted his butt to get in position to make a play on that puck. I was
heading over to try to get the puck so our defense wouldn't get hammered
coming back after it. But as soon as it was redirected, I knew it was
going in."
