It was a wild one Friday night, especially the second period which saw
6 goals (3 PPG and 1 SHG), a penalty shot (by the short-handed team)
and a goalie change. That second period also ended with WMU on a 5-on-3
power play for the last 1:30.

The first period was pretty even, but BG had 2 more power play chances,
so they could have been ahead. Tied at 1 after 1.

BG scored 3 quickies in the second, chasing WMU goalie Craig Brown out
at the 6:21 mark. Brown was not playing too bad, but his defense was
failing him. Well, the WMU squad responded to the goalie change. A
power play goal and then a short-hander made it 4-3. On that man-down
goal, Pat Ferschweiler easily skated around Brett Harkins, who is a
forward playing defense on the PP. Pat was still at a very bad angle
beside the net, so he just passed the puck thru the crease. BG goalie
Aaron Ellis opened his legs, however, and the puck bounced in off of
his skate.

Brett Harkins on the point would fail BG again, but this time Ellis
would respond. On a different power play a few minutes later, Chris
Brooks and Brett were racing for a loose puck at the red line. Chris
picked it up and the two were neck and neck at the BG blue line when
Brett let up for a second. Why Brett slowed down, I do not know, but
now Brooks was skating in alone. Brett had little recourse but to haul
him down from behind. The refs awarded Brooks a penalty shot, even
though I thought you had to be in the clear from the RED line and I
believe Brooks did not get clear until the BLUE. Ellis made a great
save with his left pad on the penalty shot, so it turned out OK in the
end for BG.

It turned out REALLY good when BG scored 40 seconds later on its
continuing power play. The Falcons spent the rest of the period
fighting off penalties. BG infractions at 18:01 and 18:31 gave the
Broncos a two man edge for 89 seconds, but they were unable to
capitalize. The fans were cheering pretty darn loudly going into the
second intermission. BG 5-3 after two.

WMU did score during their left-over 5-on-4 to start the third, but the
BG defense did not make any mistakes the rest of the way. At one point
on a Western PP, BG D Jeff Wells led a three on zero break. Jeff hit
the cross bar (argh!), but he was still able to be the first Falcon
back to break up a good WMU scoring chance. Great hustle.

Overall, it was a sloppy game, but definitely an exciting one. BG did
not get any breaks in its first two games with Western Michigan (both
in Kalamazoo), so it was good to see them pull this one out and salvage
two points against the Broncos. Tonight BG travels to highly-touted
University of Michigan to meet up with the Wolverines for the first
time this season, while WMU returns home to host Ohio State (also their
first match-up).
