The CCHA has its first week of what I call "away-away" serieses. This
week, Bowling Green & Michigan State are paired up as travelling
partners and Illinois-Chicago & Western Michigan are paired as hosting
partners. BG is at UIC on Friday and at WMU on Saturday; MSU is the
reverse. Unlike the ECAC, where the partnerships are constant
throughout the season, these are dynamic. For example, next month UIC &
UND travel to BG & OSU in an away-away series. All of this monkey-ing
around is because each team plays its 10 opponents 3 times in league
play. BG plays at UIC once and hosts them twice, for example. The BG @
UIC game is grouped with a BG @ WMU game so the Falcons don't have to
travel to the Windy City for just 1 game.
 
The other 3 CCHA serieses are all normal 2-game affairs, thank
goodness. But just wait until the final weekend of the regular season,
when no team plays the same team twice during that weekend of play!
This weekend, the Michigan at Lake Superior series looks pretty
important, even at this early stage.
 
There will be a total of 6 games in the UP this weekend, with Wisconsin
visiting Tech and Minnesota next door at Northern. Golly, Duluth is also
at home, so there'll be lots of action in that part of the country.
 
If you think the CCHA schedule is weird, get a load of Hockey East so
far. Maine finishes up its SEASON against Providence. OK, so neither
team has played any other league opponents. But nobody else in Hockey
East has even played a league game!
 
UMass-Lowell and Northeastern have an away-away with Clarkson and
St. Lawrence.  There are 4 other HEA-ECAC match-ups this weekend.
 
Harvard and Brown get a jump on the rest of the ECAC with the
first league game of the season for that conference.
 
Both Alaskas travel to Division II sites.
