HOCKEY WINS AT WESTFIELD STATE, 4-3

WESTFIELD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored three goals in the second period and went on to defeat host Westfield State, 4-3, in a Massachusetts College Athletic Conference first round playoff game at the Amelia Park Arena Thursday evening.

Junior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors), junior forward Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) and freshman forward Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored in the second period. Hill’s goal broke a scoreless tie at 5:58, Bartelson made it 2-0 at 13:14, and Marquis’ goal came with just 39 seconds left in the second period. Casey Mignone made it 3-1 when he scored a power play goal just six seconds before the second period ended.

The goals broke a scoreless tie and left the Corsairs with a 3-1 lead after the Owls scored a power play goal prior to the end of the second period.

Sophomore forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) scored a power play goal 1:42 into the third period to put the Corsairs ahead, 4-1. Lucas Romero cut the lead to 4-2 with a power play goal at 6:42, and Mignone scored his second of the game with 7:31 remaining to cut UMD’s advantage to 4-3. The Owls removed goaltender Ian Wilson for an extra attacker with 1:15 remaining, but could not beat UMass Dartmouth senior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) before time expired.
“We played our best game of the season,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It was a real will-to-win effort. We just played well all over the ice.”
The Corsairs out shot the Owls, 43-38. Dryjowicz-Burek made 35 saves, while Wilson made 39.

UMD improved to 11-14-1 with the victory, while Westfield State dropped to 13-10-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit top-seeded Fitchburg State in a MASCAC semi-final playoff game Thursday evening. The game was the final action of the season for the Owls.
