UMASS DARTMOUTH OPENS PLAYOFFS WITH 9-2 WIN OVER SALVE REGINA

NEW BEDFORD, MA–Special teams were the key in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast first round playoff game between the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team and visiting Salve Regina Saturday.

The Corsairs scored three power play goals and three shorthanded goals and went on to defeat the Seahawks, 9-2, at the Stephen Hetland Memorial Arena.
Senior forward Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) scored the first of his three goals on the power play, firing the rebound of a shot by junior forward Tyler Vrolyk (Boylston, MA/New England Junior Falcons) past SRU goaltender Chase Goodrich at 10:17 of the first period. SRU tied the score 29 seconds later when Nick Bartelloni’s shot was deflected home by Patrick Bambery after Richie Rice won a face-off deep in the UMass Dartmouth zone. Sophomore forward Nick Paquin gave the Corsairs a 2-1 lead when he scored on a rebound at 15:02 of the first period.
Lindner scored a shorthanded goal at 1:15 of the second period when he stole the puck, raced in on a two on one break and beat Goodrich. He completed his hat trick when he took a pass from junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) and scored on a breakaway at 11:57. The Corsairs received a bench penalty when someone threw a hat on the ice following Lindner’s third goal, and Tyler Trott scored 26 seconds later from point-blank range with SRU holding a two-man advantage. Senior forward Jim Foley (Brockton, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) made it5-2 when he deflected home a shot by senior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Boston Jr. Blackhawks) at 14:19.
The Corsairs scored four times in the third period to break the game open. Grant got one goal, junior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) scored UMass Dartmouth’s third shorthanded goal, and freshman forward Billy Carroll (Duxbury, MA/Brighton Academy) scored twice, including the Corsairs’ third power play goal.
“Special teams really made the difference,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “The first playoff game is something of a trap game, and Salve usually plays a style that is conducive to success in the playoffs. I think that our shorthanded goals really took them out of their game. We played well, and although (sophomore goaltender ) Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) didn’t face a lot of shots, he made the saves when he had to.”
The Corsairs out shot SRU, 34-15. Green and junior goaltender Bruce Maggio (Quincy, MA/North Quincy HS) combined to make 12 saves for UMD, while Goodrich and Steve Bell-Isle combined for 25 saves for the Seahawks.
With the victory, the Corsairs improved to 23-2-1 and advanced to the semi-finals of the ECAC Northeast playoffs, while Salve Regina fell to 10-14-1and was eliminated. The Corsairs will host the lowest remaining seed after the first round complete Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in a semi-final playoff game at the Hetland Memorial Arena.
