UIC 7 13 10 - 30

Penalties - too numerous to mention

In the second period, Andy Suhy opened the season's scoring at the UIC
Pavilion with a shot from the left point past Goalie Jon HIllebrandt. UIC
responded as Chris MacDonald moved the puck behind the net to Chris Judson who
fed Jim Maher in the slot for UIC's first ggoal of the season. Through 50
minutes of play UIC had many power plays but got few good shots on net. Goalie
Craig Brown kept WMU in the game early in the third period until Francois
LeRoux scored. Brian Gallentine's goal put Western in command. A (minor)
scuffle erupted at 14:21 of the third period which resulted in misconducts for
WMU's Jason Jennings and Colin Ward and UIC's Troy Florell and Link Bessert.
The game then went downhill as UIC coach Larry Pedrie was upset enough to draw
a game misconduct at 17:10. At one point there were 8 players in the penalty
box (and four had already gone to the dressing room!).
In any case, it's great to have the season started again, and it looks like
the officials are out to control fighting, etc. by immediately calling
multiple penalties and misconducts.

At the end the count of power plays may have been even, but through the first
fifty minutes Western was often playing with a man down and is to be praised
for good penalty killing.

UIC will try for its first victory tonight.
