Notes for this issue --
- New Hampshire and Colorado College switch positions 5 and 4 this week.
CCs tie and loss to Denver (#8) was not enough as New Hampshire
garnered a split with Maine (#2, #1 in P.I.).
- The top-10 HEAL teams continue virtually unchanged from last week.
- CCHA Michigan State gained a spot to #11 and Bowling Green gained 3
spots to #12 with wins (#41 & #23) and (#15 & #30), respectively.
They pushed ECAC Princeton (#13) out of the top-12 (Princeton lost
twice).
- RPI probably took themselves out of HEAL contention for a top-12
finish, dropping from #16 to #20 with a tie (#28) and a loss.
- When looking at top-12 this week, with RPICH or HEAL, remember that
league playoffs may dramatically effect the ratings. I'd guess that
only the top-7 HEAL are definitely "in" and only the top-6 of RPI. In
addition, non-top-12 teams may win one or more league championships,
earning themselves an automatic bid ... and forcing the #12 or #11
teams out of the NCAA playoffs.
- Speaking of RPI ... HEAL and RPI are essentially in agreement for
positions #1-#7. RPI can't tell Boston University, Michigan and Maine
apart, but HEAL seems to show a difference, but not a large one. Both
ratings have these three teams well ahead of the pack.
- Perhaps the biggest HEAL/RPI difference at this point might be (again
this week) Northeastern (#11 RPI, #17 HEAL). Since Clarkson is the
only top-12 ECAC team in RPI, a lower-ranked team (#13 Vermont) would
force out the current #12 Bowling Green were the selections made today
(and other tie-breakers are not considered). My *guess* is that NCAA
Selection Committee tie-breaking procedures would have Bowling Green
jump over Northeastern ... but that's pure speculation ... and it's
too early to really care about such minutiae :)
- We may see RPI and HEAL diverge a bit more during the playoffs as RPI
rewards the teams that *play* against tough opponents and HEAL rewards
those that *beat* tough opponents. Should teams under consideration
fail in the 1st round, I suspect they will be hurt more in their RPI
rating and HEAL rating.
On "The Heal Point System" ...
The Heal Point System is used to rank secondary schools in Maine in
several sports. The Heal Point System was developed many years ago by
Durwood Heal to rank Maine secondary school basketball teams.
On the Maine secondary school calculation ...
"P.I." stands for "Preliminary Index". "P.I." is calculated for each
team by giving a team 40 points for each win and 20 points for each tie,
and then dividing by the number of scheduled games. Minimum "P.I." is
1.00.
"T.I." stands for "Tournament Index" and is used to rank the teams.
"T.I." is calculated for each team by summing the "P.I." of the
opponents for each win, one half the "P.I." for each tie, then dividing
by the number of games scheduled and then multiplying by 10.
Note: This Division I college hockey "Heal Point System" ranking uses
the number of games played instead of the number of games scheduled.
Since all games in Division I college hockey are normally played,
there is no difference between this and the traditional Heal Point
System at end of season and this method produces better preliminary
results.
Game scores for this ranking have been provided by Mike Machnik and
HOCKEY-L, The College Hockey Discussion List, an internet mailing list
hosted by The University of Maine System. Mr. Machnik's composite of
all Division I men's ice hockey games is available in the HOCKEY-L
