In the only HE action Sunday, Providence defeated host Mass Amherst,
5-2. The win enabled PC to jump over BC into 7th place, 4 pts behind
6th place Merrimack.

SECOND
2. PC2, Brannare 11 (-), 4:12.
3. PC3, LaVarre 5 (Sundquist, Hulbig), 9:03. PPG, GWG

4. UMA1, Jacques 2 (Gaffney, Bonneau), 8:32.
5. PC4, Hanson 2 (-), 8:53.
6. UMA2, Manganaro 8 (Perry, Bonneau), 13:38.
7. PC5, Burke 9 (-), 17:03. SHG
PP: PC 2/6, UMA 0/7.
SAVES: PC Dennis 26/28, UMA Regan 27/32.

A relatively even game with the difference being 3 special teams goals
by PC to 0 for UMA. UMA played well otherwise. PC's Brannare opened
the scoring in the first with a PPG when UMA goalie Brian Regan tried
a clearing pass that hit Brannare in the chest; Brannare collected the
puck and shot it past the goaltender. PC took a 3-0 lead after two on
the strength of another unassisted goal by Brannare and a PPG by
LaVarre.

The Minutemen played an inspired third and got on the board with 11:28
left on a deflection by BU transfer Jon Jacques, making it 3-1. But
just 21 seconds later, Trevor Hanson regained the 3-goal cushion for
PC. Otherwise it could have been an exciting finish. Sal Manganaro
continued to play well and fired a 20-footer past Dennis at 13:38 to
make it 4-2, but while shorthanded, PC's Burke had his centering pass
go off of Regan's stick, then his skate and into the net for the 5-2
final.

A good showing by the Friars, who needed the win and got it without
the services of Chad Quenneville. UMA played them tough at even
strength, but PC took advantage of Minuteman mistakes on special teams
to get the big goals.

Memorable line by NESN's Dawn Mitchell when interviewing UMA goalie Brian
Regan in between periods and discussing the fact that several of the
games he has played have gone into OT: "Hopefully this one won't go
into overtime so you won't fall apart." Ouch!

PC's road win means that this weekend, only two of the 10 games played
involving HE clubs were won by the home team: Maine over NU Friday,
and BU over BC Saturday. Maine's tie with NU Saturday was the only
other non-loss by HE home teams, who went a combined 2-5-1 this
weekend (Merrimack swept Alaska-Fairbanks on the road).
