CCHA PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: Bowling Green State University junior center Martin
Jiranek has been named CCHA Player-of-the-Week for February 15-16.
Jiranek, a 5-11, 170 lb. native of Bashaw, Alberta, had six points (5G, 1A) in
a weekend sweep of Miami. In Friday's 6-2 Falcon win, Jiranek recorded his
second hat trick of the season. He scored two goals in the first period
including a power play marker. BGSU won 7-3 Saturday with Jiranek scoring two
more goals (first put BG up 4-2 and the second goal made it 5-3) and adding an
assist. Jiranek was a +5 for the weekend.
Jiranek was a June 1990 supplemental draft pick of the Washington Capitals.
This is the first time in his career Jiranek has been named CCHA P-O-T-W.

Jackson (29-3-4 in his first season). WMU - Bill Wilkinson (179-167-20 in
nine years). Series: The Lakers have a 35-25-4 advantage. Lake Superior is
8-0-2 in the last 10 meetings. Last Meeting: Nov. 9-10 at LSSU, the Lakers
won 10-2 Friday and 9-2 Saturday with Jim Dowd scoring four goals in the
Friday game. Last Meeting at WMU: Feb. 16-17, 1990, the Lakers won twice,
4-3 (OT) and 6-1.
Ferris State at Miami, Feb. 22-23 at Miami's Goggin Arena (2,200). Coaches:
FSU - Bob Mancini (20-11-5 in his first year). MIAMI - George Gwozdecky (16-
52-7 in two years at Miami, 83-82-9 overall in five years). Series: Ferris
State has a 21-13-4 lead. The Bulldogs are 2-1-3 in the last six meetings.
Last Meeting: Oct. 26-27 at FSU, Miami won 6-4 Friday, while John dePourcq
(FSU) scored two goals in Saturday's 3-3 (OT) tie. Last Meeting at Miami:
Jan. 12-13, 1990, FSU recorded two road wins, 3-1 and 8-7.
UIC at Michigan State, Feb. 22-23 at MSU's Munn Arena (6,255). Coaches: UIC
- Larry Pedrie (12-20-2 in his first season). MSU - Ron Mason (336-155-21 in
12 years at MSU, 625-265-35 in 25 years overall). Series: The Spartans have
a commanding 29-5-0 lead, including victories in the last six meetings. Last
Meeting: Oct. 12-13 at UIC, Michigan State won 8-3 Friday and 9-1 Saturday
with Shawn Heaphy tallying four goals in the series. Last Meeting at MSU:
Oct. 27-28, 1989, MSU won 6-2 Friday and 14-1 Saturday.
Ohio State vs. Bowling Green, Feb. 22 at the BGSU Ice Arena (5,000) and Feb.
23 at the OSU Ice Rink (1,410). Coaches: OSU - Jerry Welsh (298-282-42 in his
16th season). BGSU - Jerry York (295-186-23 in 12 years at BGSU, 420-273-26
overall in 19 years). Series: The Falcons have a 67-30-2 lead. Friday's
game will mark the 100th contest between these two long-time members of the
CCHA. Last Meeting: Oct. 27 at BGSU, the Falcons won 5-3 with Brett Harkins
scoring twice. Last Meeting at OSU: Oct. 26th, Bowling Green won 9-3 as
Martin Jiranek and Matt Ruchty each had two goals in the game.
Kent at Michigan, Feb. 22 at Michigan's Yost Arena (8,100). Coaches: KSU -
Bill Switaj (22-36-5 in his second year). MICH - Red Berenson (134-129-15 in
his seventh year). Series: This will be the first meeting between the
Wolverines and the Golden Flashes.
Alabama-Huntsville at Michigan, Feb. 23 at Yost Arena (8,100). UAH is coached
by Doug Ross (211-140-11 mark overall in 12 years, with a 155-105-9 record in
nine years at UAH). Ross played collegiately at Bowling Green and was a
member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team. Series: This will be the first
meeting between Michigan and the Chargers, a Division I Independent, who have
a 9-18-2 record this season.

WMU, FSU and MSU have all clinched fifth place. WMU (1 pt. vs. MSU for fourth,

CCHA Awards Announcements: The 1990-91 CANSTAR CCHA All-Rookie team will be
released next Monday with a release included in the weekly mailing. The All-
League and All-Academic Teams will be announced at the Joe Louis Arena press
conference on Monday, March 4th (11:30 a.m.) with the final four coaches in
attendance. The Rookie, Coach and Player-of-the-Year award winners will be
announced at the CCHA's 20th Anniversary Banquet on Thursday, March 7th.
FSU's dePourcq one assist away from tying school record: Bulldog senior
center John dePourcq, with one assist this past weekend, now has 124 career
assists placing him one behind Peter Lowden's ('84-87) school record.
Lakers claim third CCHA title: Michigan's loss on Saturday clinched the
1990-91 CCHA regular season title for LSSU, their second in the last four
years ('87-88). The Lakers won the 1973-74 title based on goals vs. St.
Louis.
Michigan two wins from breaking school record: Should the Wolverines win both
of their non-conference games this weekend they will break the Michigan record
for wins in a season. The 1976-77 team (NCAA Finalists) set the mark with 28.
Woolley moves up on Spartan blueline career charts: MSU junior defenseman
Jason Woolley had three goals and four assists in the weekend split with
Michigan to raise his career totals to 37 goals, 100 assists for 137 points.
Steve Beadle ('87-90) holds the record in all three categories with 42 goals
and 122 assists for 164 points.
OSU's Rutherford three goals from breaking into Buckeye top ten: Ohio State
senior center Paul Rutherford had two goals in Saturday's 6-6 (OT) tie at UIC.
He now has 72 career goals placing him three behind a three-way tie for tenth
with Rick Brebant ('85-87), Tom Scanlon ('77-80) and New Jersey Devil Jeff
Madill ('85-87). Rutherford has 23 goals this year, a career high.
WMU trio on a streak: Bronco senior Tom Auge hit the 100-point career mark
(41-59-100) with two points on Friday. Sophomore Byron Witkowski has scored
10 goals this season, all since the first of January. Goaltender Rob Laurie
is 5-0-0 in his last six appearances.
Miami's Michaud in select company: Redskin junior netminder Mark Michaud has
made 2,149 career saves placing him third on the Miami list. The top two -
Alain Chevrier (2,440) and Steve McKichan (2,244) have both seen action in the
NHL this season.
