With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the
Post-Season Tournament contests. For Contest #2, in which all rounds are
scored the same, we have a tie for first place between Andy Weise and Tony
Buffa. The tiebreaker is the number of individual conference contest won,
and since Andy won a conference contest and Tony did not, the winner of
Contest #2 is:
Andy Weise
with 66 points. He and Tony edged out runners-up William Sangrey, John
Edwards, and Sean Keller by two.
As for the individual conference winners...
The ECAC race ended in a seven(!)-way tie for first among Jim Dixon, Sean
Keller, Charlie Shub, Bill Krebs, Craig Roberts, John Edwards, and Tony
Buffa. Jim, Sean, Charlie, Bill, and Craig remained tied after the first
tiebreaker, but Jim won the crown on the second tiebreaker, being only one
point off in predicting the total goals scored in the tournament.
Hockey East had ony six people tied for first: Sean Keller, Tony Buffa,
Bill Krebs, Mark Lewin, William Sangrey, and the CHODR rating. Sean cor-
rectly predicted the championship game final score and took the first
tiebreaker.
Sean Keller and Tony Buffa tied for the lead in the WCHA race, with Sean
taking the first tiebreaker with another perfect final game score.
The NCHC saw yet another tie, this one between Andy Weise and William
Sangrey. Andy was three points closer in the first tiebreaker, so he won
the crown.
Robin Lock, Andy Weise, and John Edwards tied for the top spot in Atlantic
Hockey, with Robin and Andy still tied after the first tiebreaker. Robin’s
predicted total goals was 28 points closer to the actual result, giving him
the win.
Not to be outdone, the Big Ten also finished in a tie among William Sangrey,
Tony Buffa, Sean Keller, and myself. William’s perfect final score
prediction earned him the top spot.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 4-2) to be 4-0,
you would get two points; if you picked 2-1, you would get three points;
and if you picked 1-0, you would get five points. Obviously, the lower the
point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For the ECAC, the championship game score was 4-2, and the total goals
scored in the tournament was 113.
For Hockey East, the championship game score was 5-3.
For the WCHA, the championship game score was 5-2.
For the NCHC, the championship game score was 3-2.
For Atlantic Hockey, the championship game score was 4-2, and the total
goals scored in the tournament was 106.
For the Big Ten, the championship game score was 4-2.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win.
