PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The ninth-ranked Providence College Friars were defeated 
by the UMass-Amherst Minutemen, 3-1, in HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, 
December 8, 2000 at PC's Schneider Arena.
         The Friars' Jon DiSalvatore gave PC a 1-0 lead at the 10:23 mark 
of the first period.  Marc Suderman broke down the right hand side and 
snapped a pass to DiSalvatore in front of the net.  UMass goaltender Markus 
Helanen made diving save on DiSlavatore's first shot.  DiSalvatore then 
collected the rebound and fired another shot high over Helanen and into the 
net.
         UMass tied the game, 1-1, as Martin Miljko knocked in his own 
rebound at the 10:23 mark of the second period.  The Minutemen took their 
first lead of the game at 15:51 on a RJ Gates' first goal of the 
season.  Gates controlled a loose puck in front of the net and lifted a 
shot past Ballard.
         The third period remained scoreless until the 19:50 mark as UMass' 
Mike Warner  added an empty net goal to seal the victory for the Minutemen..
         Helanen recorded 36 stops for UMass and received the ITECH No.1 
star of the game, while Ballard stopped 15 shots in the loss.
         With the loss, the Friars drop to 8-4-3 overall and 5-3-1 in 
HOCKEY EAST action, while UMass-Amherst improve  to 4-10-2 and 4-3-0 in 
league play.
         Providence College will return to action on Friday,  December 
29  at the ninth-annual Denver Cup versus Ferris State.
