They operated in the black for years until the football program fell apart in
the late 80s and early 90s.  After they brought in Alvarez, the department went
from being $3 million in the red to $2 million in the black following their Rose
Bowl win.  Most of which can be attributed to the fact that their attendance
went from around 40,000 to 70,000 a game, generating somewhere between $400,000
and $500,000 per game in additional revenue.
