The Gopher awards banquet was this evening. A record number 340 people
(unofficial) attended. The tables were really packed in there!

We got to view the 1994-1995 highlights tape and the score was way high for
the Gophers. Erik Biever actually counted the Gopher goals and opposing goals,
but I didn't write down his numbers.

The awards were as follows:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Frank Pond Rookie of the Year Trophy : Mike Crowley (Freshman, defense)

John Mayasich Student-Athlete Trophy : Greg Zwackman (Junior, defense)

Elwin "Doc" Romnes Leadership-Sportsmanship Award : Justin McHugh
                                                       (Senior, forward)

Mike Crupi Most Determined Player Award : Scott Bell (Senior, forward)

John Mariucci Most Valuable Player Award : Brian Bonin (Junior, forward)

Dr. V. George Nagobads Unsung Hero Cup : tie Dan Trebil (Junior, defense)
                                              Jeff Callinan (Senior, goal)

Presenters of the awards were: Reed Larson (74-78), Mike Polich (72-76), and
assistant coaches Bill Butters, and Mike Guentzel.

Best quote from the dinner:

"Gopher hockey teams never lose, they just run out of time..."
Made by Scott Bell's father when accepting Scott's Most Determined
                                                Player Award.

Most touching farewell was by assistant coach Bill Butters who is leaving his
heart behind at the 'U' to pursue another personal goal at Bethel College.
Many people lined up after the end of the banquet to say a personal farewell
to Bill.

At the end of the banquet MC Frank Mazzocco (at my request) invited the players
up to sign the Born in the USA banner. The banner made it's debut in 1987 at
the Phinal Phour in Detroit and has traveled around quite a bit since then.
Lots of Gophers have signed it and there is a lot of room left for future
Gophers. This banner was also carried in the Eveleth Hockey-Hall-of-Fame parade
 in 1992.

And another great year of Gopher Hockey comes to a close.

How many days till October 14th?????
Sigh...
