Colorado College and Denver skated to a 5-5 tie this evening in Colorado
Springs before a sellout crowd. I think this was also the most vocal crowd
there this year.
Denver got on the board first with a goal from Dairon, but the lead wasn't
for long. A little over a minute later, Chad Remackel scored for the Tigers
during a 4-on-4 to even things up, and it was tied at 1 after one period.
The Pioneers regained the lead on a goal by Chris Kenady, but CC played
catch-up again and Colin Schmidt tied it up. With a little over a minute
left to play in the period, Jason Elders regained the lead with a power-play
goal for Denver, to make the score 3-2. At this point a few people threw
some stuff on the ice, which they had repeatedly made announcements not to
do so. After a discussion between referees Greg Shepherd and Mike Schmitt,
there was no penalty, but a warning that the next time it happened, the
person would be ejected and CC would get a minor penalty. Luckily, nothing
else was thrown the rest of the game.
13 seconds into the third DU got their fourth goal, from captain Koch, and
things were starting to look not so good for the Tigers. CC began to turn
it around midway through the period, however, on some beautiful work by David
Paxton. He first checked Kenady off the puck and his skates, then proceeded
down the ice where he received the puck and scored. The Tigers struck again
to even things up at 4 each when Peter Geronazzo got a goal. The Pioneers
stormed the Tiger net after that, and Ryan Bach made some great saves, but
one shot by Elders managed to get by to give Denver the lead again. The
fans were nervous, hoping CC could score and send it into overtime, and the
Tigers didn't disappoint, as Jay McNeill got his 31st goal of the year to
tie it up again.
During overtime, both teams skated hard, but nobody could get anything in,
so it ended 5-5, the first tie of the year for the Tigers.
Tomorrow night the rematch happens in Denver, as the two teams fight for
possession of the Gold Pan.
In other WCHA action, North Dakota beat Alaska Anchorage 4-3 and Minnesota-
Duluth beat Northern Michigan (don't remember that score).
