                PIRATES' GOALTENDER JIM CAREY EARNS
              AHL SHERWOOD PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
 
WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA - Portland Pirates' rookie goaltender JIM CAREY has
been named AHL Sher-Wood Player of the Week for the week ending January
22, 1995.  Carey posted a 3-0-0 record with a .933 save percentage and a
1.67 goals against average this week.  For his accomplishments, Sher-Wood
will donate $500 in sticks and a case of InGlasCo pucks to a local youth
hockey organization in the Portland area.
        On Friday night in St. John's, Carey allowed just one goal while
facing 29 shots in Portland's 6-1 victory over the Maple Leafs. The
following night, Carey kept the Pirates in first place with a solid 19
save performance preserving a 2-1 vicotry against St. John's.  On Sunday,
Carey picked up his league leading 24th victory of the season with a 5-3
win over the Cape Breton Oilers, stopping 23 shots.  On the week, the
netminder stopped 70-75 shots and did not allow a third period goal.
        This week's award marks the third time this season that Carey has
been named Sher-Wood Player of the Week.  A native of Dorchester, MA, the
20 year old leads the legue in wins (24), shutouts (4), minutes played
(2496), saves (1144), and is among the AHL's top three in goals against
average (2.6) and save percentage (0.914).
        Placing secind in this week's voting was defenseman JANNE LAUKKANEN
of the Cornwall Aces.  Also nominated for the Sher-Wood Player of the Week
were Providence's CLAYTON BEDDOES and JEAN FROANCOIS LABBE of the PEI
Senators.
