        LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) -- The United States routed Germany 16-0
Tuesday in the opening round of the women's world ice hockey
championships.
        Karen Bye and Elizabeth Brown each scored three times for the
United States. Bye also had two assists.
        In other opening-round games, China tied Sweden 4-4, Finland
blanked Switzerland 13-0 and Canada beat Norway 12-0
        Wei Guo scored one third-period goal and assisted on another to
pace China. Wei drew China to within 4-3 with a goal with 8:09
left. Sang Hong added the tying goal with 3:00 remaining off a pass
from Wei.
        For Finland, Katja Lavonius scored three goals and Marianne
Ihalainen and Tiia Reima each had two. Switzerland has yet to score
in the tournament.
        Defending champion Canada was led by Danielle Goyette's four
goals in the victory over Norway.
