The Minnesota Golden Gophers beat the Clarkson Golden Knights,2-1,
in a physical contest in Worcester's Centrum.

Minnesota started out the scoring with a goal abuot 5 minutes
into the game. It was a powerplay goal shortly after one man for CLarkson
returned from the penalty box (but another man was still there). Clarkson
tied up the game later in the period.

Clarkson dominated the second period but failed to beat hot goalie
Tom Newman. Clarkson outplayed Minnesota in every aspect ofthe
game. Speed, corner battles, passing, etc. But the key poitn may have
been when CLarkson had a 5 on 3 advantage for 2 full minutes but failed
to score.

Whatever coach Doug Woog said in the 2nd intermission really worked.
UM came out flying in the third and it was only a matter of time before
they got one by CU goalie Chris Rogles (who played as well in the third
as Newman did in the second). But the inevitable happened and UM too,
a 2-1 lead.

Clarkson finally regrouped and played well the last 5 minutes but
failed to crack Newman's armor. Final score: Gophers 2 Knights 1.

Minnesota goes on to face 37-1-1 Maine tonight.

This was the final game for 7 of CLarkson's top players. Thanks to
seniors Chris Rogles, Hugo Belanger, Steve Dubinsky, Guy Sanderson,
Marty dOrsonnens, Mikko Tavi and Dave Green for four outstanding years,
four NC$$ tournament appearances, two ECAC titles and an NC$$ Final
Four trip. Best of luck.

On another note, this was Clarkson's 7th one goal loss... although they
7-0 in two goal games, they're 0-7 in one goal games. This was Clarkson's
second worst offensive output of the year (only behind a 6-0 loss at Maine).

Best of luck to the Gophers tonight (they're gonna need it).

THREE STARS
1) Tom Newman, Minnesota
2) Chris Rogles, Clarkson
3) Doug Woog's 2nd intermission speech
