TORONTO (UPI) -- Former NHL president Gil Stein's vision of so-called
hockey Dream Teams consisting of the league's superstar players has been
quashed for at least the 1994 Olympics.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who succeeded Stein, and NHL Player's
Association Executive Director Bob Goodenow announced Friday that NHL
players will not be participating in the 1994 Winter Olympics in
Lillehammer, Norway, but the idea again will be revived for the 1998
Games.
``After consulting with the International Olympic Committee, the
International Ice Hockey Federation, USA Hockey and Hockey Canada, it is
clear that the issues relating to NHL players participating in the 1994
Olympics cannot be adequately resolved to the satisfaction of all
concerned under the current time constraints,'' Bettman said. ``All
parties have agreed that it will be their goal to ensure the
participation of NHL players by 1998.''
Stein floated the idea after taking over for John Ziegler and
watching the success of the NBA's so-called Dream Team in this past
summer's Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. The idea, however, met with
some heavy opposition from NHL owners because of the interruption to the
NHL season to field such teams.
