ELLSWORTH NAMED WCHA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF WEEK
MADISON, Wis. -- Sophomore goaltender Cam Ellsworth of the Michigan
Tech men's ice hockey team has been named the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week.
Ellsworth stopped 94 of 100 shots on goal (.940 saves percentage) in
an overtime tie and two-goal setback against second-ranked Colorado
College last weekend. He allowed just four even-stength goals in the
two games.
The Leamington, Ont., native made 39 saves in the 3-3 tie on Jan. 17
and then had a career-high 55 saves, including 28 in a scoreless
first period, in the 3-1 loss on Jan. 18. Those 28 saves equalled the
third highest total in one period in WCHA history. The league record
of 30 saves in one period is held by CC's Eddie Mio (vs. UW on
11/17/72) and Michigan State's Ron Clark (vs. UND on 11/16/74).
Michigan Tech plays the middle two games of a six-game homestand this
weekend vs. Alaska Anchorage. Opening faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
(EST) both Friday (Jan. 24) and Saturday (Jan. 25) at the MacInnes
Student Ice Arena on the MTU campus.
