MARSTERS LEADS ENGINEERS TO VICTORY
Men’s hockey team downs Princeton, 1-0, in crucial ECAC game

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s (RPI) got 23 saves from Nathan Marsters and Conrad Barnes scored the game’s only goal at 9:08 of the third period for a 1-0 victory over Princeton in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) game before a crowd of 3,031 at the Houston Field House in Troy, NY.

With the win, RPI improves to 14-11-2 overall and 8-7-2 in the league. They remain in sixth place with 18 points while the Tigers, who are 7-14-3 overall and 6-9-2 in the ECAC, drop to tenth with 14 points. Marsters, a freshman, was outstanding throughout, especially in the third period when he knocked away several point blank shots late in the third period with Princeton’s net empty. A native of Grimsby, Ont., and
an ECAC Rookie of the Year candidate, Marsters earned his third shutout of the season.

Barnes’ goal, his second in two games and his second of the season, came about when Engineers’ defenseman Jim Vickers poked the puck to Mikael Hammarstrom, who sent a pass to Eric Cavosie. Cavosie carried the puck down the right side of the ice down to the goaline, where he feathered a pass to Barnes. The freshman from Greenwood Village, Colo., then slammed the puck past Princeton goaltender Dave Stathos to break the
scoreless tie.

Rensselaer, which is just one point out of fourth place and three points out of third, will be in action tomorrow night when they’ll host Yale in another ECAC game at Pepsi Arena. The Tigers will be in Schenectady to play Union College, who defeated Yale, 5-1, on Friday. Both games begin at 7pm.
