Friday night before a crowd of 4,100 at the Carlson Center in
Fairbanks, Chris Kirwan scored an overtime goal with 45 second left in
OT to lift the surging Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks to a 3-2 win over Notre
Dame. The game was a close checking affair that saw the Irish take a
2-1 lead into the third period only to see Fairbanks tie it up on a
point shot through a crowd by Captain Eon McFarlane. The Nooks
dominated the overtime and won it when Kevin Epp hit the speedy Kirwan
with a pass just as he split the Irish defense at the N.D. blue line.
Keeping his feet under him despite a fierce check by a Notre Dame
defenseman, Kirwan drove home the winning goal from about 10 feet out.
Saturday, the two teams will battle once more at the Carlson Center to
see who wins the rubber match of the 3-game set (Notre Dame won
Thursday's game, 4-2) and most importantly, who will take 4 points away
with them from this weekend's action.
