Michigan defeated Michigan State by a score of 3 to 1 before a crowd of
19,032 at the Joe Louis Arena.
 
Michigan came out strong and scored twice in the first few minutes of the
first period while MSU was tentative. With the score 2-0, MSU settled
down and a large part of the game was fairly evenly played. MSU scored at
the beginning of the second period on the end of a 5 minute power play.
(Greg Crozier had received a 5-minute penalty and game disqualification
for a hit on MSU's Keyes who was shaken up but later returned to play.)
 
Late in the third period MSU pulled Alban and Michigan scored an empty
net goal. For most of the game MSU and Michigan were happy to play a
defensive opportunistic game. Michigan was able to play most of the game
at the MSU end and had more shots on goal. State only had two shots on
goal during the final period. Each team scored once on a powerplay.
