Yes, it was. This led to an interesting situation for the championship
game the following season (1992), which pitted Lake Superior against
Wisconsin. Since two Western teams were involved, the officials had to be
from the East. Somehow, the available officials were ranked, and the guy
who came out on top of the rankings was... Frank Cole. Well, Lake Superior
objected vehemently to having him do the game, based on what had happened
in the quarterfinal series in '91, and he was bypassed. The next ref in
the rankings, as I recall, was John Gallagher (ECAC fans can stop laughing
now), but he was injured or something, which led to the selection of the
next ref, Tim MacConaghy. (ECAC fans can stop laughing now) As anyone who
saw that game probably remembers, MacConaghy was dreadfully inconsistent
and wound up getting assaulted himself by some Wisconsin players after the
game was over. Maybe Cole would have been a better choice after all...

I hope you have the 1992 game on video tape, you need to watch it again. I
guess the NHL didn't agree with Bill - Tim McConaghy was chosen to Referee
in the NHL during the strike!!!!!!!
