Here is an article from the Feb. 14 issue of the Minnesota Daily that Pam
Sweeney may have overlooked (it does have *some* college hockey content).

> Goldy Gopher roughed up at hockey game

> When someone started taking slap shots at University mascot Goldy
> Gopher during Friday night's hockey game, few would have guessed the
> alleged assailant was a University alumnus.
>
> The Gophers beat Colorado College 3-2, and as Goldy led fans at
> Mariucci Arena in a final cheer minutes before the game ended, an
> overzealous fan jumped out of the stands knocking Goldy to the
> ground from his perch on a hand railing.
>
> "I wasn't expecting that at all," said 22-year-old Thomas Lord, a
> University advertising junior who has worked as Goldy for the past
> two years during basketball season, and for some hockey and baseball
> games.
>
> Jeffrey Norman Baker, 25, who graduated from the University last
> year, was charged with fifth-degree assault.
>
> Baker, a season-ticket holder according to police reports, could not
> be reached for comment.
>
> After he was pushed, Lord said, Baker put him in a headlock and
> started twisting his head, trying to get the mask off.
>
> "He just yanked on my head, and pulled my head a few times," Lord
> said, adding that he was not injured in the incident. "Fans were
> coming up to me and saying, 'Oh, Goldy, it's OK.'"
>
> Baker was placed under citizens arrest by Lord, cited by University
> Police and released.
>
> "I felt bad about it," Lord said about pressing assault charges
> against Baker. "But, you have to set a precedent. You can't go
> around and goon the mascot. If you do these things, you must face
> the penalties."
>
> Lord likened his job to that of a cheerleader, saying that if a
> cheerleader were attacked during a game, he or she would most likely
> also press charges.
>
> Lord said it was the first time an adult has tried to hurt him while
> dressed as Goldy.
>
> "Little kids will pinch you or twist your arm to see if you're
> real," Lord said.
